Aug 16 – Aug 19: Boston GreenFest

What, Where and When
Boston GreenFest 2012 is a fully inclusive festival filled with fun learning experiences to address the important changes we need to make in our daily lives and our neighborhoods. It will begin at Boston City Hall Plaza with a Kick-Off Concert on Thursday, August 16, from 5-9:30 pm and will continue all day long, Friday-Saturday, August 17-18, from noon-9:30 pm and 11 am-8 pm. This year we are introducing The Movement Festival and will have performances and free dance classes on Sunday, August 19 from 10 am-5 pm. It is an event that will have something for everybody, young and old.

What’s Happening at Boston GreenFest 2012?
All of our neighborhoods will come together from across Greater Boston to work on solutions to make our city a healthy sustainable place to live. People from all over New England will be welcome to join us. Boston GreenFest 2012 brings many opportunities to the heart of our city to learn about green products, services, ideas, networks, and jobs. There will be interactive exhibits, workshops, presentations, and special features: continuous live entertainment on three stages, EcoTimeTrail, EcoFashion, GreenFilmFest for children and adults, eco-games, One Gallon Challenge – a “race” starting at noon on Thursday, August 16th from Plymouth, MA to GreenFest for cars that can drive 112 miles on 1 gallon of gas and arrive at City Hall throughout the afternoon to be on hand during the entire festival, lots of great kids’ activities, great food, and much more.

Find out how to save money and make your home efficient. Buy local fresh and organic fruits and vegetables. Explore interesting vendors of unique crafts and products. Jul 10: Cultivating Food Justice with Julian Agyeman

Join MetroFuture Walks & Talks for a special presentation on just sustainability and food justice from Julian Agyeman, Professor and Chair of Urban and Environmental Policy & Planning at Tufts University.  His most recent publication, Cultivating Food Justice, examines how many low-income neighborhoods and communities of color do not have access to nutritious food.  They often live in “food deserts” where the lack of grocery stores and healthy options often leaves them with no choice but convenience stores and fast food.  “Cultivating Food Justice” envisions an environmentally sustainable and socially just future for the food system.  Julian Agyeman is an environmental social scientist and the originator of the concept of ‘just sustainability’, the full integration of social justice and sustainability, defined as the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems. Jun 20: Live Webcast on Accelerating Innovation in Fuel Cells

The Energy Department, in partnership with the Battelle Commercialization Council of Labs, will present a live webcast titled Accelerating Innovation: Fuel Cells on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. EDT. This webcast will highlight four fuel cell-focused technologies developed at DOE national laboratories, all of which are found on EERE’s Energy Innovation Portal. During this webcast, attendees will learn about cutting-edge hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, with a focus on core-shell nanocatalysts for hydrogen production and fuel cell electrodes, as well as activated aluminum hydride hydrogen storage. Presenter Kimberley Elcess of Brookhaven National Laboratory will participate in a question-and-answer session at the end of the presentation.

May 15: Financing the Future of Energy Summit

Join the Sustainable Endowments Institute and our 15 partner institutions for the Financing the Future of Energy Efficiency Summit at Harvard University on May 15, 2012.

This one-day gathering will bring together national leaders in sustainability and finance with presidents, trustees, and senior officials in finance, facilities and sustainability at colleges, universities, foundations and other nonprofit institutions.

The Summit’s theme is Transforming Energy Efficiency Upgrades from Expenses to High Return Investments; the focus is on colleges and universities as pivotal points to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to demonstrate the groundbreaking budget benefits of green revolving funds.
