“Autism means so many different things. Some kids don’t need as much accommodation, and some need a lot—it’s important to recognize the diversity of health-care needs among all the children, despite that one diagnosis.”
Many children feel anxious about visiting the dentist. At Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM), we recognize that for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), dental fears can be heightened due to sensory and spatial challenges, as well as difficulties with communication. Dental visits have many sights and sounds that can be scary. This challenge can make it difficult for parents/caregivers to manage their child’s oral health care.
TUSDM established Autism Smile to provide support for families with children with ASD aged 13 and under. Our aim is to ease dental anxiety for both caregivers and children!
We do this by providing:
- Virtual support and coaching sessions conducted over Zoom;
- Sensory tool kits tailored to improving your success with daily oral care and with visits to the dentist;
- Resources and advice to help you navigate your child’s oral health;
- Stories and testimonials from other parents who have been through similar situations; and
- Oral health tips specifically designed for parents/caregivers of children with ASD.
*Autism Smiles is supported by grant funds, which allows us to offer this program to all participating families free of charge.*
