Site Coordinator, Somerville Community Growing Center

The Friends of the Community Growing Center (FCGC) is the volunteer group that supports the planning, maintenance and funding needs of the city owned garden/park space located at 22 Vinal Avenue in Somerville, MA. Volunteers are essential to our organization, helping to implement a wide range of activities and events each season. The Friends have a license with the City of Somerville to operate and maintain the site, currently in a renovation phase after serving the community for 25 years. This site coordinator assists the volunteer board with stewardship of the site. Interviews will start in March 2019, and will continue until position is filled.

Contract terms are dependent on experience, with the salary range of $16-19/ hour, for approximately 5 hours/week spread over key active months of April through October (less other months). Hours to be set by consultant, but will require some weekend days and evenings. Payment is on quarterly schedule. The Site Coordinator will communicate with designated representative of Executive Committee of the FCGC and/or FCGC Site Committee.

Qualifications & Requirements:
-Strong communication skills – written, oral, visual (flyers, PowerPoint)
-Strong organizational skills, including electronic documentation (such as
Google Drive)
-Demonstrated experience with multi-functional urban greenspace and landscape
management, using organic and regenerative approaches
-Experience working collaboratively with volunteers, including a range of ages and cultures, in hands-on learning opportunities
-Second language and/or experience working with Somerville’s diverse
populations
-Experience with urban gardening and/or urban plant/tree/site management
-Experience with project management, to support CPA grant projects
-Personal experience with the SCGC or demonstrated relevant experience
-Familiarity with local social infrastructure, with ties to sectors such as
food production/gardening, urban agriculture, sustainable landscape practices including native plants, environmental/sustainability community or other relevant groups
-Requires own access to regular electronic communications and computer
programs
-On site tasks (~70%) requires light to moderate physical activity to model
volunteer tasks

Duties and Responsibilities:
–       Provide task specific training for volunteers to assist with range of
responsibilities, under
        Volunteer Coordinator’s and/or Board Committee Chair’s guidance, as
appropriate
–       Support updating of FCGC Volunteer database, related to Site
activities
–       Organize and manage Volunteer Teams as related to Compost, Watering, Pruning/Green Infrastructure, Urban Ag, Redesign/renovation, with support of Volunteer Coordinator
–       Organize and manage Volunteer Work Days, as indicated by need (average
of 6-8/year), in collaboration with Site Committee
–       Communicate volunteer-related site needs to FCGC Board
–       Manage scheduling and tracking of site volunteers, with help of
Volunteer Coordinator
–       Assist in program promotion, supported by Volunteer Coordinator/
Program Committee
–       Coordinate public attendance tracking methods and records.
–       Communication with FCGC Board to ensure prioritized tasks are
completed
