Program Assistant, Pre-College Intensive: Programming & App Design

Brief overview:

We are looking to hire several graduate student program assistants for a new pre-college summer program, an intensive focusing on Programming and App Design.  This position would involve mentoring 10th-, 11th– and 12th-grade students learning Python and R, with a primary responsibility of supporting students as they work to master these two languages and then apply their newly acquired skills to develop their own apps.

Program Summary:

The program runs for three weeks, July 14-August 2. We expect to have around 40 students from all over the world.  Students will be entering the program at a variety of different levels, from no experience to prior mastery of other programming language/s. In addition to their morning coursework in Python and R, students will be participating in skill-building modules on topics like natural language processing and data visualization.  The goal is to give them a strong foundation in these languages and associated skills, as well as meaningful experience in building and pitching their own apps (in small groups). The Pre-College Intensive in Programming & App Design is part of a series of new residential pre-college programs that successfully launched this past summer.

Responsibilities:

Graduate student program assistants will be on staff from 9am to 5pm for the duration of the program (with an hour break for lunch); they will need to be available for a training session during the week of July 8th. They will be responsible for working closely with program attendees to assist them across all aspects of the program – supporting the instructor in her teaching, elaborating on and reinforcing the new skills being taught in skill-building modules, mentoring the small groups as they work on app development, etc. Program assistants will work closely with the program director to ensure a robust program experience for all attendees. Program assistants should be comfortable with both Python and R and be able to master any new skills quickly. Previous experience with teaching or tutoring preferred.
