Tufts Hillel Repairs the World

Tufts Hillel has formed a new partnership with Repair the World, “an organization committed to inspiring American Jews and their communities to give their time and effort to serve those in need.” As part of the partnership, a new blog will feature “regular and guest contributors reflecting on issues of social justice, community service and engagement from a Jewish perspective.”

In a recent post, junior Daphne Amir reflected on her trip to the the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village in Rwanda this summer.

It was invaluable to learn about Rwanda’s dark history and then be able to meet the inspirational, young survivors who will carry their country forward. The trip has taught me many precious lessons, among which is my connection and compassion to people across borders.

Eat Well With Janel

Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy graduate and dietitian Janel Ovrut (N’07) manages a website and blog that focuses on her love of good-tasting food that is healthy and can lead to better eating habits. Eat Well With Janel features everything from recipes to reviews and recommendations for products to try. Below is a quick recipe for an avocado bean spread that looks delicious.

Avocado Bean Spread on Chiabatta Bread

Ingredients:

  • 3 avocados, mashed
  • 1 can pinto beans, rinsed, drained and mashed
  • 1/2 white onion, diced
  • 2 Tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp buffalo wing seasoning
  • salt to taste

Mash all ingredients together, spread on crusty bread, and enjoy! Watching baseball while you eat is optional.

Nutritious Blogging

Two alumnae of Tufts’ Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Willow Jarosh (N’06) and Stephanie Clarke (N’06) of C&J Nutrition, will be guest blogging about nutrition for fashion designer and former reality TV star Whitney Port from The City and The Hills, each Tuesday for the next 7 weeks. They’ve already published their first post.

The Tufts alumnae are targeting primarily college-aged readers with suggestions on quick and inexpensive meals, tips for staying healthy while you’re busy, and advice on alcohol and nutrition, among other topics.

Both Jarosh and Clarke have also accepted positions as contributing editors for SELF magazine. Their monthly column will debut in its November issue, which is available in mid-October. In addition to their column, they’ll be writing other nutrition tips and articles in the magazine.

On top of all this, they also tweet everything they eat! Today for lunch, Jarosh had “brown rice bread toasted w avocado, zucchini, red pepper, tofu, tomato.” Mmmm.
