The Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC), a nonprofit organization supporting contemporary craft, seeks a knowledgeable and dynamic Assistant Curator.

Responsibilities
Curating
Conceptualize and curate 4 exhibitions per year and organize related educational programs (lectures, workshops, tours). The exhibitions are focused on the work of American artists who utilize the craft media – ceramics, glass, metal, fiber and wood. Exhibitions will include objects that span the various conceptual, technical, functional, and formal approaches being used by contemporary makers. The Assistant Curator will also be responsible for installing exhibitions, inventorying work and other duties typically carried out by Preparators and Registrars at larger organizations.

Sales

Objects from our exhibitions are for sale. On a daily basis, the Assistant Curator engages with the general public, cultivates relationships with collectors and has ultimate responsibility for meeting sales goals. Recognizing and exhibiting excellent work, educating the general public, and supporting SAC and the artists we represent through the sale of artwork are three equally important endeavors.

Outreach
Conduct studio visits with relevant makers – artists, craftsmen, designers…
Interact with Universities by serving as visiting critic /lecturer
Serve as juror on Grant and Award panels
Attend relevant conferences, lectures, and events
Mentor students by taking on interns each year
Working with the Executive Director and other staff, the Assistant Curator will help identify and write grant proposals and otherwise assist with development related responsibilities

Assist in other organization-wide duties and event support as necessary.

Other
SAC is a vibrant place with a small and dedicated staff that wears many hats. We have great ambitions and work hard to achieve them. The new Assistant Curator should recognize the challenges and rewards associated with employment at an organization of our scope and (current) size.

Reports to the Executive Director.

The Assistant Curator should possess excellent communication skills and should be hard working, detail oriented, and have a sense of humor.
Proficiency in Macintosh computers and email communications is a must, along with a basic understanding of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
