*D**ESCRIPTION*****

The part time educator is responsible for developing, delivering, and
evaluating high-quality educational programs to schools, families, and
adult groups according to the highest standard of the museum¹s potential.
This position offers a unique opportunity to practice a wide range of
skills, lead innovative, multidisciplinary activities, engage in
collaborative projects, and connect people of all ages and cultural
backgrounds with the museum¹s collection. Educator is instrumental in
strengthening visitors¹ awareness and appreciation of Long Island¹s
maritime history, whaling, conservation, ocean life sciences, and people¹s
connection to the sea¹s resources. This is a part time, hourly, non-exempt
position under the supervision of the Program Director. We especially need
assistance Tuesdays and Thursday mornings, with occasional evening,
overnight, and weekend work. Work during school break weeks required.****

*Q**UALIFICATIONS*****

Degree in education, plus appropriate certification; Master¹s preferred****

At least 2 years¹ experience teaching in classroom and informal museum
settings; demonstrated skill in creating age-appropriate materials for many
learning styles****

Knowledge of hands-on, inquiry-based, constructivist learning theories and
practices****

Knowledge of Long Island¹s maritime history/whale biology, or willingness
to learn****

Creative, motivated, and enthusiastic; excellent public presentation skills*

Reliable and punctual; able to multi-task and manage time effectively****

Able to work independently or part of a close team****

Willingness to travel to offsite locations with personal car, as needed****

Excellent verbal and writing skills; strong organizational skills****

Moderate lifting (approx 25 pounds)****

Computer proficient (Microsoft Office and Outlook; knowledge of Microsoft
Publisher or other design programs desired)****

*R**ESPONSIBILITIES*****

1. Works with the Program Director in the creation, development, planning,
marketing, booking, and evaluation of****

a. School programs during weekday mornings****

b. Family and children¹s programs during select legal holidays, school
breaks, and summer****

c. Birthday parties as needed during the weekend****

d. Offsite outreach programs, either at libraries or schools****

e. Other education programs and initiatives either on or off-site,
including scout programs and sleepovers****

2. Furthering knowledge in the best practices of museum education, which
includes****

a. Furthering efforts for collaborative programs and fully utilizing our
space****

b. Participating in at least 4 professional development opportunities a year
****

c. Documenting professional goals****

d. Participating in an annual evaluation****

3. Works with the curator and other staff in interpreting the museum¹s
collections and assistance in developing the museum¹s yearly changing
exhibit****

4. Assistance with daily operations in the museum, including appropriate
maintenance, light housekeeping, and overseeing volunteers/interns/front
desk interpreters****

5. Undertakes or assists with special projects at the request of the
Executive Director of Program Director****
