Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director, Programs and
Exhibitions is a key leadership position responsible for the overall
strategic vision, management and integration of NCM’s Exhibition, Visitor
Experience, and Education programs. The Director, Programs and Exhibitions
oversees all aspects of the museum experience and is the managerial backbone
that directs the work of the Exhibitions, Visitor Experience and Education
teams.

The position is responsible for ensuring that the creative direction
instigated by the ED and Board is implemented in all aspects of programming.
In addition, this position oversees how the creative team coordinates with
all other museum functions and work groups. The Director, Programs and
Exhibitions directs and manages day to day operations of the department and
all project, program and administrative budgets. It is the fundamental
responsibility of the Director, Programs and Exhibitions to prioritize
programming projects against institutional cash flow.

The Director, Programs and Exhibitions provides supervision, support and
mentorship to a team of 7 full time and over 25 part-time employees who are
responsible for generating the NCM experience. This team includes the:

*   Assistant Curator, Exhibitions
*   Manager, Visitor Experience
*   Coordinator, Education
*   Coordinator, Visitor Engagement
*   Exhibitions Coordinator & Preparator
*   Preparator, Studio Arts
*   Museum Guide Lead
*   Part-time Museum Guides, camp counselors, and seasonal program
assistants

Principal Directorial Responsibilities:

*   Serves as key member of organizational leadership team, collaborating
with Board of Directors, ED, and Senior Staff on executing NCM’s Mission and
Vision and ensuring that NCM’s Mission and Vision are integrated in all
programs and visitor experiences
*   Provides leadership, expertise and inspiration to NCM’s ED and Board of
Directors and supports fundraising, marketing and special events as needed
*   Fosters relationships with strategic partners who strengthen and
complement NCM’s programs
*   Strengthen, maintain and work to extend the museum’s role within the
San Diego arts community, and serve as primary spokesperson for the Programs
and Exhibitions team
*   Builds credibility for and stewards NCM’s reputation as a one of a kind
model for contemporary art programming for children and families and a
thought leader in creativity and innovation
*   Provides leadership, guidance and support to team of seven full time
staff in a manner that promotes collaboration, open communication, creative
problem-solving and professional development
*   Oversees and provides vision for all exhibition, visitor experience,
and education programs with emphasis on executing NCM’s focus on serving
schools and engaging visual artists in all aspects of content development
*   Directs all administration of the department, including a departmental
budget, contracts, personnel-related issues, and hiring and directing key
program staff

Programmatic Responsibilities:

Exhibitions

*   Develop and manage exhibition budget including exhibition development
and annual maintenance
*   Develop and oversee all the commissioning of all artists, including
contracts, project development and individual project budget management
*   Oversee final design and installation of all exhibitions
*   Direct maintenance priorities for 2 year thematic exhibition

Education

*   Direct NCM Serves Schools Programs, including providing ongoing
understanding to ED and Board about how NCM can best serve the region’s
school and education communities
*   Oversee NCM summer and day camp programs, ensuring that the program
deliver on its goals to be a mission driven experience and opportunity for
families to connect NCM’s core values and principles at the most intensive
level
*   Direct all museum facilitation and visitor engagement, including
management of the Creative Team, Artists Lens program and other education
content development
*   Ensure programmatic adherence to NCM’s stated Goals for Education
Experiences

Visitor Experience

*   Direct all activities and tasks associated with staffing and operating
the public spaces of the museum
*   Ensure that the balance of projects, programs and activities offered
for visitors reflect NCM’s commitment to serving a broad audience and core
beliefs in respecting art and respecting children
*   Set standards for and oversee hiring and training of museum floor staff
to ensure the highest level customer service and visitor safety
*   In coordination with Marketing and Communication department, lead
efforts to track and analyze attendance and develop audience driving
programs and initiatives

Qualifications:

*   Bachelor of Arts degree required
*   Minimum of 5 years non-profit management experience in museum/arts
administration, exhibition development, and/or education
*   Career arc that demonstrates a strong interest in contemporary art and
a history of working with living artists and communicating their ideas.
*   Highly developed skills in communication, organization and management
*   Proven track record in precise budget management
*   Must be an exceptional role model and coach with a demonstrated ability
to lead a team to accomplish goals in a supportive, collaborative and
empowering manner
*   Excellent strategic planning, entrepreneurial and problem-solving
skills – must have a positive, creative approach to both and be an
imaginative, flexible and resourceful individual
*   Demonstrated ability to synthesize ideas, develop effective plans and
execute them with excellence

Work Environment
The majority of work is performed in a museum environment with attendant
noise level and requires observance of safe work practices, fire
regulations, and avoidance of falls, trips, and similar office work hazards.
Due to the nature of the position, some weekend and evening hours will be
required.
