Our study aims to better understand and prevent racial differences in pregnancy-related outcomes. We hope to use your experience to learn about barriers to improving the quality of maternal care. We want to learn about how including doula care in efforts to improve the quality of maternal care affects pregnancy-related outcomes of Black women. We hope to provide the foundation to create future interventions aimed at improving maternal health and ultimately reducing racial differences in maternal outcomes.

In Massachusetts, Black women die at twice the rate of white women from pregnancy-related complications.

WHY IS THIS STUDY IMPORTANT?

There is little existing research exploring whether the differences in maternal health experiences of Black birthing individuals can be improved using feedback of Black mothers along with prenatal, birth, and postpartum support from community doulas.

Recognizing, tracking, and understanding patterns of poor maternal outcomes is key to reducing differences in outcomes.

Black birthing individuals experience major differences in pregnancy care, complications, and maternal and infant outcomes, compared to White birthing individuals. The risk of pregnancy-related deaths for Black women in the U.S. is three to four times higher than for White women. (CDC)
