Tufts Medford/Somerville Core Facilities

Tufts Advanced Microscopic Imaging Center

The Tufts Advanced Microscopic Imaging Center (TAMIC) offers a wide array of optical and spectral quantitative imaging techniques, for the chemical and structural characterization of materials at submicron scales. Our staff is particularly experienced in confocal imaging of biological specimens and engineered tissues. The TAMIC facility is equipped with two state-of-the-art Leica laser scanning confocal/multiphoton systems (TCS SP8)

Tufts Materials Micro Characterization Facility

The Tufts Materials Micro Characterization Facility offers material characterization at the nano and micro scales, such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface imaging, and fluorescent properties. The characterization is done using a state-of-the-art integrated confocal Raman-AFM-SNOM-TERS-Lifetime (FLIM) system by WITec Instruments Corp. (Alpha 300R+ Raman system) and iNano Nanoindenter by Micromechanics.

Tufts Micro- and Nano-Fabrication Facility

The Tufts Micro and Nano Fabrication Facility is a Class 1000 cleanroom providing micro and nano fabrication and metrology capabilities. The lab offers contact photolithography capabilities, ebeam lithography, PVD thin film deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP), Parylene coating, O2/SF6/CF4 plasma processing, dicing, wirebonding, and a variety of wet chemical processing capabilities, in addition to numerous metrology services.

Tufts Imaging and Cell Analysis Facility

The Tufts Imaging and Cell Analysis Facility offers four confocal microscopes are available: Leica SPE, Nikon A1R, standard Leica SP8, and Leica Falcon SP8 with a high-speed resonant scanner, fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) capability and deconvolution software.

Tufts Laser Cytometry Facility

The Tufts Laser Cytometry Facility (TLC) is a core facility offering Flow and Laser Cytometry equipment and services to the local scientific community. TLC offers walk-up, self-service FACS analysis. TLC also provides cell sorting on several instruments. Our facility has the following instruments:

  • Aurora Spectral Flow Cytometer (CytekBio) – 5 lasers and 64 color detectors, with tube and multi-well options.
  • LSR-II (Becton Dickinson) – 5 lasers and 13 color parameters, as well as optional HTS.
  • FACSCalibur (BD) – 2 lasers and 4 fluorescent parameters.
  • FACS Aria (Becton Dickinson with custom modifications by Cytek) – 5 lasers and 16 color detectors (wave lengths 355nm, 405 nm, 588nm, 641nm)
  • Legacy MoFlo (Cytomation) – 4 lasers and 6 color detectors (405nm, 488nm, 561nm, 641nm)
