Subdivision modeling is a technique of digital 3d modeling used to create clean models with scalable detail that look good when rendered. It is primarily used by animators; for example, it was used to create all the characters in Toy Story. However, it can be very useful for all sorts of designers, not just animators. SubD mode allows creators to manipulate the vertices of their shapes and exercise much more control over their designs.

Access SubD Mode by navigating to the tools menu (purple button on non-drawing hand) and selecting primitive objects (bottom button). Open the primitive objects menu and convert to SubD mode by clicking the button all the way to the top right.

Create an object. Notice how your shape has many vertices and looks sort of sharp.

You can manipulate these vertices by switching from Default Primitives mode to Customised Primitives mode. Switch the lever below SubD Mode to the right.

In this mode, your shape has vertices that can be pushed in or out.

Play around with your vertices until you achieve the shape you want

SubD mode can also be used to merge objects. After you create an object in SubD mode, this menu will pop up:

Switch the snap lever all the way to the right. This will allow you to snap points from one object to points onto another.

Now you know how to use Subdivision Mode! It can be a very useful tool for creating.
