Goals

Our goal is to train Data Professionals who are competent to synthesize numbers and narratives in designing and implementing data-driven solutions that are technically efficient and contextually appropriate for effective implementation.

D3M@Tufts develops, implements, and evaluates a set of curricular innovations and program elements to achieve this goal. These elements reflect an interdisciplinary “systems thinking” framework that highlights learning-by-doing and integration of duality of notions (like numbers and narratives; quantitative and qualitative; etc.) with a problem-driven Harnessing Data Revolution (HDR) strategy. Our team takes an interdisciplinary systems perspective by bringing in domain expertise and proven tools and techniques from several interfacing disciplines. It plans to expands the reach of D3M@Tufts to food-energy-water, ecology, hydrology, environment and resource policy, optimization, complex systems, multi-scale modeling, stakeholder engagement, learning by doing and decision-making with a problem-focused strategy. We develop data-focused curricular and research elements that are evidence-based and aligned to future workforce needs with transferable skills.

Objectives

Develop a problem-driven and data-focused HDR strategy to train two types of data professionals

Develop a flexible course design and delivery model with Modular Course Elements (MCEs)

Provide interdisciplinary expertise and skills through Problem Focused Immersion (PFIs)
