Advancing Equity & Climate Justice: Unveiling Research and Collaborative Solutions

April 3 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm

Delve into the intersection of climate science and social justice with Dr. Kim Cobb. Explore her groundbreaking research on climate change impacts and the imperative of addressing environmental inequalities through climate justice.

Location: Via Zoom

Invited Speaker: Dr. Kim Cobb, Lawrence and Barbara Margolis Director at the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, Brown University

Dr. Kim Cobb, the Director of the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society will examine the environmental and public health benefits of embracing the full portfolio of science-based solutions to the climate crisis. She will discuss the power of solutions-driven, multi-sector research projects in addressing historic inequities in exposure to air pollution, extreme heat, and coastal flooding, and their links to structural racism. The discussion will underscore the importance of engaging communities in solutions-inspired research through community science and sustained partnerships, grounded in principles of equitable funding, data stewardship, and project governance. Progress towards these goals requires that institutions of higher education address the many structural barriers that stand in the way of this work.

Dr. Kim Cobb, a climate researcher, uses past and present climate data to understand future climate change impacts, emphasizing extremes and coastal flooding. With a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps, she joined Brown University in 2022 after directing Georgia Tech’s Global Change Program and serving as the ADVANCE Professor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She advocates for women in science and has promoted diversity throughout her career.
