Legacies of Racism in Medical Science, and the Responsibility of Researchers

Today

February 18 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

This session examines how the legacy of slavery and racist ideas in science continue to shape contemporary medical research, health narratives, and disparities, particularly in a moment when diversity, equity, and inclusion is increasingly politicized and contested through law, policy, and funding decisions. Drawing on historical examples and present-day research, the session explores how harmful scientific beliefs were produced, perpetuated, and embedded in medicine—and how their impacts persist today. Participants will be invited to grapple with the ethical power and responsibility of research and to consider what it means to reckon with, repair, and address these legacies through racially ethical and equitable practices in Black and communities of color.

Speaker: Amarildo “Lilu” Barbosa, PhD, Program Director & Associate Teaching Professor at Tufts University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
