What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is also sometimes called a reverse root canal. It is a surgical procedure performed when a root canal has not been successful or the infection has gotten too large. The procedure takes out the tip of the tooth where the inflammation remains. The area is then filled with a antibacterial and soothing material.

What causes the need for an apicoectomy?

Apicoectomies are sometimes needed if a root canal was done but the infection has not gone away. It may also be indicated if a patient cannot have a root canal.

What are symptoms that indicate the need for an apicoectomy?

An infected tooth that has already been root canal treated. Symptoms will present similarly to a tooth that needs root canal therapy.

How is an apicoectomy is performed?

Dentist will open a small window at the tip of the tooth root and remove remaining inflammed/infected tissue as well as the tip of the tooth. The area is sealed and stitched for appropriate healing.
