Avulsion

What is Avulsion?

Avulsion is when a tooth (or many teeth) have been traumatically knocked out of your mouth completely.

What causes Avulsion?

Avulsion is caused by a traumatic physical accident to your face/mouth. This may include falls, bicycling, sports, traffic accidents, and attacks.

What are its Symptoms?

The tooth is completely out of the mouth.

Treatment for Avulsion

If it is a baby tooth: It is not recommended to re-implant a baby tooth that has come out due to risk of causing problems to the adult tooth growing underneath it. Seek dental care but do not place the tooth back in.

If it is an adult tooth: If possible, rinse and gently place the tooth back into its socket and bite down on gauze until you can reach professional dental care. Try to avoid touching the root to prevent contamination. Alternatively, the tooth can be kept in “Save-a-tooth” or HBSS (Hanks Balanced Salt Solution), saliva, milk, or saline. Do not store the tooth in water. Immediately seek emergency dental care.
