What is Calculus?
Calculus (also called tartar) is when dental plaque is not removed regularly through brushing and flossing, it hardens and becomes calculus.
What causes calculus?
When plaque is not properly removed the minerals from our saliva are deposited on the plaque causing it to harden within1-3 days.
What are its symptoms?
Calculus will show as yellow or brown buildup and stains on teeth; bad breath and inflamed gums.
Treatment for calculus
Unlike plaque, calculus is sometimes hard to see and cannot be removed by brushing. A dentist or dental hygienist will remove the buildup with hand instruments.
