What is a crossbite?

Upper and lower teeth do not fit properly together when biting. It is common for the upper teeth to look like they are hiding behind the lower teeth.

What causes a crossbite?

Genetics, skeletal (related to the skull), late loss of baby teeth, adult teeth erupt in the incorrect place, thumb sucking, and abnormal swallowing.

What are symptoms of a crossbite?

May not have symptoms but can be a cosmetic issue. It can lead to cheek or tongue biting, jaw and muscle pain, and headaches.

What is treatment for a crossbite?

For children a cross bite should be corrected as soon as it is noticed. The dentist can make a wire or plastic appliance for the mouth to help widen the upper arch. Jaw surgery may be needed.
