Erosion

What is erosion?

Erosion is the wearing away of the tooth surfaces.

What causes erosion?

Erosion can be caused by consuming acidic foods and drinks (ex: sodas, coffee, wine, energy drinks, juices) especially over a long period of time. Stomach conditions like GERD, or frequent vomiting can also cause erosion on the back of teeth.

What are its symptoms?

Loss of tooth surface (the tooth will look smooth, shiny, and discolored). Sometimes your teeth will become more sensitive to hot, cold and/or sweets. If untreated, the enamel can be completely worn away.

Treatment options for erosion

The dentist will replace the eroded surfaces with fillings or crowns. It is important to find and treat the root cause of the erosion to prevent it from progressing.
