What is geographic tongue?

Inflammation of papilla (small pink bumps on tongue that are hairlike) on tongue. Geographic tongue is when patches of papilla are missing and look smooth.

Geographic tongue is also known as benign migratory glossitis.

What causes geographic tongue?

Unknown.

What are symptoms of geographic tongue?

  • Smooth and red patches on the top or side of your tongue
  • Patches can change shape
  • Pain or burning when eating spicy or acidic foods

Treatment options for geographic tongue

It is harmless so no treatment is needed.
