What is osteomyelitis?

An infection that has reached the bone which can occur in most bones in the body, including the jaws.

What is the cause of osteomyelitis?

Bacteria, fungi, or viruses enter the bone. This is more common in immunocompromised people.

Symptoms of osteomyelitis

Fever, swelling, and pain in the affected area. Some patients may not experience any symptoms but it can be seen on an x-ray.

Treatment for osteomyelitis

Should be professionally treated; may include draining the site, and/or prescribing medication.
