Parulis

What is a parulis?

An abscess in the gum; a gum “boil” or “pimple”.

What causes a parulis?

A parulis can be caused from an untreated cavity, injury or trauma to the mouth and/or teeth, or dental work that has deteriorated over time.

Symptoms of a parulis

Symptoms of a parulis will be a raised area in the gums usually near your teeth. It may show as pimple-like, and sometimes may have pestilent center. In addition, it is common to experience pain in that area as well as bad breath. If untreated, the infection may spread and lead to feeling unwell and fever.

Treatment for a parulis

It is important to see your dentist if you believe you have a parulis. The abscess must be drained and a dentist must determine treatment for the tooth. Some options include root canal therapy and/or antibiotics. In some cases the tooth must be removed. If you are feeling unwell and/or have a fever, it is important to go to the emergency room immediately.
