What is pericoronitis?
Pericoronitis is swelling and infection of the gums around the third molar (also known as wisdom tooth). This happens when the tooth has not completely come out of the gums, and there is a flap of gum still covering some of the tooth.
What causes pericoronitis?
Pericoronitis is caused from a collection of fluid, debris, or bacteria under the gum flap of a partially erupted third molar.
Symptoms of pericoronitis
Symptoms can range as the infection worsens. Mild symptoms include painful, swollen gums, puss, unpleasant taste or smell. Severe symptoms may include swelling of the lymph nodes or face, jaw spasms.
Treatment for pericoronitis
Treatment options for pericorontis depend on the severity of the infection. A dentist will determine what is needed, so it is important to see your dentist if you believe you have pericoronitis. Treatment options include antibiotics, antibacterial oral rinse, or surgical removal of the extra gum.
