What is tooth resorption?
Tooth resorption is the slow loss of tooth structure. This can start from the outside of the root and move inward (external resorption), or start from inside the pulp and travel outward (internal resorption).
What causes tooth resorption?
Resorption is usually a result of injury to the tooth that causes swelling. Examples of injury include teeth grinding, heavy orthodontic forces, and possibly tooth bleaching; sometimes the cause is unknown.
Symptoms of tooth resorption
Symptoms of resorption include pain, red or swollen gums, pink areas on the enamel (outer layer of the tooth).
Treatment for tooth resorption
Your dentist will ask about your dental history or any past injuries to the tooth and take a dental x-ray. If early it may be stopped, but resorption that has gone too far may need root canal therapy or removal of tooth.
