Tartar

What is the definition of tartar?

When dental plaque is not removed regularly by brushing and flossing, it hardens and becomes tartar (calculus).

What causes tartar?

Plaque is a soft sticky layer on a tooth that forms from the bacteria in our mouth and the waste products. When plaque is not properly removed the minerals from our saliva are deposited on the plaque causing it to harden within 24 to 72hrs.

Symptoms of tartar

Sometimes you can see a yellow or brown buildup around the gum line.

Treatment of tartar

Unlike plaque, tartar buildup is sometimes hard to see and even harder to remove. Have a dentist or dental hygienist remove tartar buildup with their hand instruments.
