Abstract:

Despite occupational therapists (OTs) possessing the skills to work in community-based settings, few currently practice in these environments. This project explored the potential benefits of integrating an OT into New England Disabled Sports (NEDS), an adaptive sports program. The purpose was to enhance program operations through an inclusive, strengths-based, and client-centered OT lens to foster increased quality of participant experience. Using observations, semi-structured interviews (n=6), and surveys (pre n=21; post n=14), data informed the development of materials including revised intake forms, an orientation video with supplemental PowerPoint, and a disability educational presentation. Emergent themes (e.g., parking, preparation, coach information) guided content development. Post-intervention results demonstrated improved participant preparedness and program efficiency, highlighting the value of OT involvement in adaptive sports setting
