Abstract:

Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) face heightened risks of secondary health issues, many of which can be mitigated through effective health management strategies. SCI&U, an online health management program, offers Peer Health Coaching (PHC) to enhance health self-management among individuals with SCI. This project aimed to identify and build a upon the PHC training process. A needs assessment was conducted, synthesizing, a decade of SCI&U materials and a qualitative analysis of data from a focus group (n=4) experienced PHCs. The resulting training framework and materials were informed by the site’s values of trauma-informed care, strengths-based practice, activation, person centered, equifinality and empowerment. The next phase involves the implementation and evaluation of training materials and evaluation of training and participant outcomes.
