Since I am not old enough to drive a car yet, my main way of transportation is riding my bike. Whether it be going downtown or to my friend’s house, I am always riding my bike. In order to get to those places, I have to take the main roads, some of which don’t have sidewalks. As a result, I wear a helmet because the risk of there being an accident is relatively high. Although wearing a helmet provides good protection, I wanted to develop something that would alert the rider if they were too close to a certain object/person. Using LEDs, sensors, and servos, I was able to develop a prototype to help prevent the user from getting into a serious accident.

  • Hi Neel, cool idea! I’m a cyclist as well and I love the idea of more safety features. Thanks for sharing in your video about your iterative process, engineering requires a lot of persistence!

  • This reminds me of the feature that’s available in car’s, where they begin to beep if you are backing up and are too close to an object. Would it be possible to attach what you made both in the front and back of a bike to let the user know when they are coming to close to an object? Maybe some other directions could be to somehow gauge the user’s speed an make a sound to let them know if they should slow down? This is really cool and I see lots of potential in the idea!
