Automated Tomato-Ripeness Detector
Automated Tomato-Ripeness Detector
A robot that accurately identifies and differentiates between ripe, unripe, or rotten tomatoes.

To most people, this process is a simple everyday task, however, in the commercial world, it is quite the opposite. As thousands of fruits are processed simultaneously, it can be extremely burdensome to check each and every fruit for ripeness. This is where an automated ripeness detector, such as this one, comes into play, simplifying and enhancing the entire process. With a conveyor belt powered by a DC motor, this robot is able to transport different fruits (a tomato in this case) under a light/color detector to determine their ripeness. Using a Nearest Neighbor supervised learning algorithm, the robot was given pre-identified examples of ripe, unripe, and rotten tomatoes to use as reference when identifying and categorizing new data. If the tomato was found to be ripe, it would continue on the conveyor belt, but if it was found to be rotten or unripe it would be transported off into the opposite direction.
