Musical Instrument Accessibility
For some, playing music is one of life’s singular enjoyments. Losing the ability to do so can be devastating to such an individual. For those born without this ability, gaining it could be a form of therapy and a source of happiness. The goal of this project was to design a device for physically impaired individuals that will help them gain or regain some ability to play musical instruments. As proof of concept, this project focused specifically on the piano and on individuals with limited or erratic arm and hand movement. The prototype device implements two octaves of playable keys with adaptive input correction and the option for the user to hear the music they played on an acoustic piano or MIDI instrument.
