March 2020 FWN Newsletter

March 2020

Dear Fletcher Women,

Warm greetings from the Fletcher Women’s Network (FWN) and welcome to our first newsletter of 2020! A lot has happened since our last newsletter. The Fletcher Women’s Network has new leadership and is working on initiatives to support Fletcher women around the globe.
Before we share our FWN news, we send encouragement and support to you, your families, and loved ones living in the time of COVID-19. The circumstances vary for many of us. Regardless of where we are, we can support one another and stay engaged. Several of us have already had virtual coffee breaks or cocktail hours with friends in near and far places. This is certainly a chance to reach out to a classmate or two and connect.
We have included our favorite resources for weathering this crisis at the end of this newsletter, but we’d love to hear from the wider FWN network on how you’re staying healthy, getting the facts, and spending your time. Please join us on Facebook or LinkedIn and share your stories.
Be well!

FWN celebrates International Women’s Day in Boston and DC

Over 30 alumnae and students gathered at Mariana Stoyancheva’s home outside of Boston on March 8th for FWN/Boston’s second annual celebration of IWD. Simultaneously, several DC alumnae gathered at the home of alumna Nahla Rajan. Both groups were able to convene before the risk of rapid spread COVID-19 occured. Women of all ages and professional backgrounds expressed how rewarding and fun it was to connect in person, and discuss both personal and professional issues of interest. Several noted it was the first time in years they had met other Fletcher women; they were so pleased by the connections made and they plan to attend more events. A highlight was Dean Kyte’s attendance at the Boston area brunch. She has shown herself to be a major supporter of FWN and has already taken numerous opportunities to highlight our network. We were honored to have her share insights and plans for Fletcher. Her remarks and Q&A session were live streamed to the DC group, so they too had the opportunity to see and hear Dean Kyte. Both events were a perfect low-key effort that brought together a vibrant group of Fletcher women for delicious food, tea and non-stop conversation. In coming years, we hope that other local groups will be able to celebrate IWD as well.  FWN/Boston Liaison, Ally Hawkins, livestreams Dean Kyte’s remarks to the DC gathering.

FWN Launches First Mentoring Program
Due to the great interest of FWN members in supporting each other’s growth and professional development, the FWN has launched its first mentoring program. The aim of the program is to support professional development through mentoring. Approximately 102 alumnae from 22 countries who graduated between 1969 and 2019 were matched as mentors and mentees. They were matched based on their interests and what they wanted to achieve through the program. In November 2019, FWN kickstarted the program with two online webinars attended by both mentors and mentees that offered tips and explained how the process would work. In March 2020, the program was officially launched with another webinar attended by 20 alumnae. The mentoring program will continue to engage women on an ongoing basis. If you are interested in joining this program, reach out to Claudia (cpcunha@uol.com.br) and Iliriana (iliriana.kacaniku@gmail.com) for more information.

Annual Fletcher Alumni-Student Reception in DC
The annual Fletcher Alumni-Student Networking Reception in Washington, DC, took place on February 20 at the National Press Club with many students and a record number of alumni attending. Alumni look forward to this event as an opportunity to give back to current students, and to reconnect with Fletcher friends.
Alumni were grouped by areas of work and students engaged with them asking questions about the career fields of their interest. Bar tables were crowded with business cards, drinks, and tasty food. Alumni and students engaged in an evening dedicated to sharing career advice and professional tips. Dean Rachel Kyte provided insightful remarks about the state of the Fletcher School, its strengths, challenges and her vision going forward which includes engaging alumni more deliberately.

Fletcher Women’s Network: New leadership, new energy!
In December 2019, the FWN Executive Committee welcomed new women to our team with different professional experiences, motivations, drive, and passion. You can see the names and positions they serve in here: https://sites.tufts.edu/fwn/committees/. The Executive Committee, together with Communications and Professional Development Committees, are working on the 2020 – 2021 Strategic Plan and activities for this two-year period. Opportunity alert: The Communications Committee is recruiting a social media maven to lead engagement on FWN’s Facebook and Linkedin channels. A detailed description of the role is here — please reach out to Ana Garcia (agmaparicio@gmail.com) and Valerie Hamilton (valerie@postcardtv.com) if that sounds like you!

Can you host Fletcher interns?
The Fletcher School is looking for organizations that can host last-minute interns this summer. Several students have to change their plans due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. If you work in an organization in a country with no or minimum risk, and can offer such opportunities, please reach out to Elana Givens, Director of Career Services (elana.givens@tufts.edu).

Online resources on COVID-19 awareness and how to spend your time at home!
Get the facts on COVID-19
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a WhatsApp messaging service to keep the worldwide public abreast of the facts and latest news on COVID-19. In the US, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security issues daily COVID-19 situation reports, online or by free subscription.

Keeping sane while keeping safe:
As we try to keep ourselves and our communities safer by staying at home, many of us are spending unaccustomed amounts of time alone or together with partners, children and other loved ones. Luckily there are lots of ways to stay connected to the world outside your COVID-19 bubble, from video-chat meals with friends and drinks with colleagues to free virtual museum visitsconcertsopera and even Broadway shows

New, comprehensive COVID-19 Resource Guide:
This guide is incredibly comprehensive with respect to a lot of different kinds of resources. It has an ongoing list of all mutual aid projects throughout the country and world where people are asking for help, has resources for mental health, and resources for those who are the most marginalized at this time. We’d love to hear your solutions for keeping happy and healthy in uncertain times.
