News from The Gass Lab
The Gass Lab joins the NC State Global One Health Academy
Oct 2024. The Gass Lab has officially joined the Global One Health Academy (GOHA) which is operated by NC State. Our lab will provide expertise to GOHA in the areas of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), zoonotic virus ecology in Africa and South and Southeast Asia, and for risk reduction intervention development and validation in several global sites. We will provide training for the next generation of One Health specialists.
The Gass Lab joins the The NSF Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic Expansion (APPEX)
Sept 2024. The Gass Lab has been asked to join the APPEX Center, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, which will meaningfully advance pandemic science as a multidisciplinary effort. We will help ensure that the vision of pandemic science is not simply about filling in knowledge gaps but is about framing how to meet complex challenges, improving both our ability to respond to existing disease threats and to be flexible, nimble, and adaptable to the next emerging pathogen we cannot yet anticipate.
The Gass Lab joins planning committee for the proposed future North American One Health University Network (NAOHUN)
Sept 2024. The Gass Lab, along with One Health colleagues at Tufts University including Dr. Felicia Nutter and Dr. Hellen Amuguni has been invited to participate in the planning committee for a North American One Health University Network (NAOHUN), which will be modeled based on the successful African and Southeast Asian One Health Networks (AFROHUN and SEAOHUN), which were supported by Tufts from the start. We will continue to support the development of a One Health Workforce throughout North America, specifically focused on research and intervention implementation for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at the interface of food agricultural farm biosecurity.
The Gass Lab attends the 8th World One Health Congress, Cape Town, South Africa

The Gass Lab Inauguration @ Tufts Med and Vet Schools
Sept 2022. The Gass Lab was debuted as a joint venture between the School of Medicine and Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in September 2022. We strive to research anthropogenic, environmental, and ecological factors that influence the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic infections in human populations. We will teach and mentor students and grow a body of evidence demonstrating prevention and mitigation techniques to protect human, animal, and environmental health to ensure a prosperous One Health future.
