Currently, we have two chapters of the IDEA Lab: The IDEA Human Factors Lab and the IDEA Lab @ Fletcher. Both chapters follow similar structures and policies, which are highlighted on this page.
How it Works
The IDEA lab hosts a wide range of interdisciplinary projects that intersect with areas including: programming, mechanical engineering, robotics, ergonomics, UX/UI, industrial design, VR/AR/MR, machine learning, consumer psychology, entrepreneurship, social justice, environmental justice, and more. Each project team has a lead(s) who sets the vision for the project and a project coordinator(s) who ensures the timely progression of the project. Together with their team of 5-10 students, each team gains valuable project/product management skills from hands-on experience.
Our Policies
Minimum time commitment: 4-5 hours/week
- Usually entails 3-4 hours of team research, including one weekly team meeting
- An additional 1 hour bi-weekly meeting with the entire lab
Attendance policy
- We take attendance, even if you are on Zoom
- An absence is excused if you let your project leaders know 4 days in advance
- After 3 unexcused absences, projects leads will get in touch with the co-directors and decide on whether or not you should continue in the lab
Communication
- Our communication is mainly done via the lab Slack (which you will be added to upon joining)
- We use Zoom for virtual meetings and may use Outlook/iMessage for additional communication
We have additional policies in place for active participation, trial periods, and confidentiality. These will be provided to you should you join the lab.
