MTEDS 24 is organizing a session during the main ADSA meeting on “Methods for Teaching Ethics in Data Science” and a half-day workshop.

MTEDS 24 Session during the main meeting

The ADSA session on Methods for Teaching Ethics in Data Science aims to foster a reflection on the challenges associated with teaching Ethics in technical or quantitative domains, sharing experiences and progress made, and establishing core best practices. Our goal is to build a community empowering data science instructors in teaching the new generation of data scientists and tech practitioners.

Invited Speaker:  Dr. Benedetta Giovanola, Full Professor, Jean Monnet Chair Ethics for Inclusive Digital Europe, University of Macerata

Call for Papers, Main Session: We welcome submissions that explore and contribute to the development of best practices in teaching ethics in data science and related fields. Experience reports or position papers on this topic are both welcome and could explore effective strategies for integrating discussions of ethics in data science in the classroom with the aim of fostering a culture of ethical responsibility among data science students. Accepted submissions will be invited to be published in the ADSA proceedings and will be invited to give 15-minute talks at the session.

MTEDS 24 Case Studies Workshop

This workshop session builds on the Methods for Teaching Ethics in Data Science (MTEDS) 2023 initiative to develop high-quality case studies for teaching data science ethics, specifically focusing on the ethical considerations that teaching methods can introduce. We’ll hold a half-day interactive workshop where participants analyze existing case studies and contribute their own.

This session builds on the Methods for Teaching Ethics in Data Science (MTEDS) 2023 initiative to develop high-quality case studies for teaching data science ethics, specifically focusing on the ethical considerations that teaching methods can introduce. We’ll hold a half-day interactive workshop where participants analyze existing case studies and contribute their own.

Attendees are encouraged to submit original, fictional, or real-world case studies that explore the ethical considerations of teaching data science methodologies, particularly those related to AI ethics, aligning with the ADSA 2024 theme: Data Science and AI – Keeping Humans in the Loop. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer review process. Selected submissions will be included alongside refined case studies from MTEDS 2023.

Through this collaborative process, participants will gain valuable skills in identifying ethical dilemmas, forming consensus on complex issues, and crafting effective case studies. All reviewed case studies will be published in the ADSA proceedings, promoting best practices in data science ethics education.
