Full Time Museum Education Associate / Museum Educator

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America’s leading historic,
cultural and educational institutions. As an educational and cultural

The Museum Education Assistant/Museum Educator is a full-time position in
the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s dynamic and collaborative Education
Department reporting to the Manager of School Programs. Within the Museum’s
active education environment, this person will be a creative, energetic,
organized and well-spoken, and will deliver inquiry-based, history and
science school programs for both museum-based and outreach programs. When
not working with groups, this position provides support for the department
that includes record keeping for all department purchases and invoices,
ordering department supplies, keeping program supply areas organized,
liaising with special events for in-house education programming needs, and
maintaining the department’s programming calendar.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Deliver Museum-based interdisciplinary and interactive tours and workshops
to K-12 students.
* Deliver dynamic outreach programs at libraries, senior centers and other
community organizations.
* Lead weekday and weekend gallery demonstrations in the Museum’s new
interactive areas for general visitors, families and groups.
* Assist with weekday, weekend and evening educational programs, including
workshops, classes, seminars, summer camps, overnight visits, distance
learning through video conferencing technology, public programs, and teacher
institutes.
* Deliver programming for all audience groups, prepare lesson plans and
program materials, set-up classroom and gallery spaces for programming,
databases, evaluation.
* Work with other education staff to develop new innovative programs as
assigned and assist in departmental strategic planning as assigned.
* Provide department support – on-going upkeep of spreadsheets for purchases
and invoices, order department supplies, and organize program supply areas.
* Represent the Education Department at inter-departmental meetings
including those about special events at the Museum and for in-house
education programming needs.
* Maintain the department’s yearly internal programming calendar.
* Perform other duties as assigned that furthers the department’s mission.

The ideal candidate will have a BA/BS or MA in Education, American History,
Science or Museum Studies and a minimum of one to two years teaching
experience working with K-12 student groups. Proven experience teaching in
schools, museums, or similar venue preferred. This candidate should have
strong audience rapport, classroom/group management skills and organization
skills, familiarity with the New York City Department of Education’s
standards for the sciences and social studies as well as be proficient in MS
Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and the Internet. Proficiency in a
language other than English a plus. Experience with audiences with special
needs is desired. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team
member with strong written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must
have strong organizational skills, be able to manage multiple projects, be
energetic and creative. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as
necessary.
