One Health in Northeast India: Insights and Perspectives from the Field

Global Health Speaker Series 2024-2025

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and their environment, underscoring the importance of a One Health approach. In India, diverse wildlife, a large livestock population, and high human density present opportunities for harmonious coexistence, while increasing disease transmission risks. The North-East Region (NER) of India, located within the Indo Burma biodiversity hotspot, is a region of concern due to its unique ecology, cultural practices, dietary habits, and high animal-to-human ratio. This talk will highlight research initiatives by the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong that explore the epidemiology and transmission of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases from a One Health perspective, using malaria as an example. It will also explore the field challenges encountered by the research team in conducting this work.
