Be a DCR Park Interpreter in Plymouth This Summer

The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails and parkways.

Interviews for the park interpreted position will be conducted after the application period closes on May, 21st. Successful candidates may be required to start immediately.

Duties: 

  • Performs various interpretive, educational and administrative tasks in the operation of Visitor Services and Interpretation.
  • Staffs an information desk/kiosk, providing visitor information and orientation, researching, developing and presenting a variety of interpretive programs that reflect the natural, cultural and historical themes of the park.
  • Coordinates special events and programs independently or in partnership with other public or private organizations as required.

Applicants must be at least eighteen years old, possess a basic knowledge of natural and/or cultural history, have experience working with the public, hold solid communications skills, have the ability to follow oral and written instructions, and the ability to work in a team setting.

Valid Drivers license and reliable transportation required.

Required to wear an official uniform.

Uniforms components are provided.

Housing is not provided by DCR.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: 

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in interpreting, recreation programming or environmental education in a public or private agency, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

I. An Associate’s or higher degree with a major in recreation or park management, park interpretation, recreation programming or environmental education may be substituted for the required experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

This paid position begins June 2, 2013 and runs thru September 2, 2013.

Position Description:

  • The Wrangler/Naturalist is responsible for filling dual roles at the Pine Butte Guest Ranch in Montana, splitting time as a Naturalist and as a Wrangler depending on the needs of the guests. As a Naturalist, this position is responsible for leading educational outings for the guests of Pine Butte Guest Ranch. While filling the role of Wrangler, this position is responsible for assisting in the care of the horses and leading day rides for guests.  This position works closely with the guests to insure their safety and comfort while riding or hiking.  The Wrangler/Naturalist is under the supervision of the Ranch Manager.
  • There is much contact with the public as well as other ranch staff. The duties of the Wrangler/Naturalist may include any of the following functions:
  • Assisting theSeasonal Naturalist by leading or co-leading hikes, van excursions, field trips, slide shows, and other natural history activities.
  • Providing information to Pine Butte Guest Ranch clients on native flora, a wide spectrum of wildlife, local ecology, geology, field ornithology, and other natural history subjects.
  • Familiarizing ranch guests with The Nature Conservancy and its goals on Pine Butte Swamp Preserve and along the Rocky Mountain Front.
  • Insuring the safety and comfort of all riders.
  • Leading half-day and full-day rides out of the guest ranch.
  • Assisting in the care of horses, including watering, feeding, wrangling, shoeing and veterinary care.
  • Assisting in the cleaning of the tack shed, corrals, hitching rack, and barn area.
  • Performing any other ranch chores as needed, including but not limited to trail building, fencing, splitting and distributing firewood, controlling noxious weeds, and driving to town for errands.
  • Contributing to a friendly, warm ranch atmosphere.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Compensation: $9.00/hr plus a 401k plan, flexible work policies and a collaborative work environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma and 1 year related experience.
  • Horsemanship experience and skills
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience in using and maintaining related equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Able to lead hikes up to 10 miles in length through mountainous terrain at altitudes of up to 9,000’ while instructing, educating and entertaining guests.
  • WFR preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience or knowledge of natural systems helpful but not required.
  • Ability to complete tasks within assigned timeframes, possibly in the absence of supervision.
  • Experience or ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (may be obtained after hire).
  • Will be working with the public and must present a professional image at all times.
  • Experience in customer service

This is a full-time (40 hours/week), temporary position with employment dates of May 10, 2013 – October 9, 2013.

Plant Pest Survey Technician

The Department of Agricultural Resources is seeking applicants to fill a temporary position (May-October, 2013) as Plant Pest Survey Technician.

The Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey (CAPS) Program, through the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, provides survey and outreach efforts for introduced plant pests, pathogens and weeds of concern to the state of Massachusetts.
The incumbent will play an important role in exotic pest detection in Massachusetts.  Primarily, the incumbent will be responsible for installing and servicing insect traps in the field, and sampling plant material to be tested for plant diseases.
This position will require working in a variety of environments including orchards, fields, groves, storage sites, nurseries, industrial sites, forests, ports of entry, etc.
Incumbent will be responsible for collecting insect and plant specimens and recording data. Some data collection will require the use of GPS, PDAs and data management systems.  Work will require extensive travel in Massachusetts. Incumbent will work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of insect and plant taxonomy.
Previous experience with insect and/or plant surveys.
Knowledge of technology including GPS, spreadsheet and database software, and data collection using PDAs

This is a full-time, temporary position.  Maxium hours per week is 37.5
Applicants must have experience performing the duties described below or have completed coursework above high school that includes scientific or technical courses such as biology, entomology, ecology, botany, agriculture, etc.
Applicants must have experience with spreadsheet and database entry, and familiarity with GPS and mapping technology.

AmeriCorps Green Mountain Farm-to-School Coordinator

Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a nonprofit organization promoting the health and wellbeing of Vermont’s children, farms and communities by providing programs to connect schools and farms through food and education. Position Description

The primary responsibilities of the Farm-to-School Coordinator will be to develop, grow, present, and evaluate GMFTS’ Farm-to-School Programs and provide general operational and administrative support. This is a full-time year-long AmeriCorps position. The Farm-to-School Coordinator reports to the Program Director.

Start-Date: August 19, 2013

Location: Newport, Vermont

The Farm-to-School Coordinator will:

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with GMFTS school and farm partners; Serve as the primary contact for 2-4 schools
  • Deliver GMFTS educational programs and events including taste tests, farm field trips, and in-class workshops
  • Create lesson plans for programming and maintain educational materials
  • Coordinate and maintain school gardens
  • Encourage local food purchasing by schools
  • Design outreach and publicity materials
  • Use database to collect, analyze, and report data for program evaluation
  • Work closely with staff, parents, food service directors, and farmers
  • Facilitate monthly Farm-to-School Committee meetings
  • Work as an independent member of a team of Coordinators

Appalachian Mountain Club Community Coordinator

 The Community Programs Coordinator is a full time one year position based out of AMC’s Boston office.
This new position is designed to help us invigorate public programming close to Boston including the Bay Circuit trail corridor in the Framingham area, and one other Metrowest or Boston Community. Responsibilities will include developing and providing free introductory outdoor programs (include hiking, biking, canoeing, etc.) as well as recruiting and training new AMC volunteers to lead additional family programming. The Coordinator will engage in outreach and relationship building with existing and new partners. Time will be spent both with office-based administrative duties and field-based program delivery and training. Close cooperation and coordination with other AMC departments is essential to the success of the position particularly in the development of programs that dovetail with existing resources and the educational goals of the Club.
The Youth and Family Outdoor Community Coordinator will interact with AMC’s local chapter leadership and other volunteers including volunteers and staff with the Bay Circuit Alliance. Local chapters are run by volunteers who organize meetings, trips, trainings and other events to fulfill the club’s mission of getting people outdoors so that they learn about nature and will then act to protect the places they love. The focus of working with the chapters will be to communicate about available programs, assess their volunteer skills set and needs, and build a cadre of volunteers who can sustain close to home programming into the future.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop, manage, and deliver a full complement of family based programs (focused on children aged 6-12) that will spark dynamic participant experiences and encourage continued contact and connection with the outdoors.
  • Assist in the creation of an overall vision and long term plan to ensure that the program strategy will continue beyond the focus year, consistent with the AMC mission, and appealing to target audiences.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor new family outing leaders including volunteer leader leaders. Monitor programs through co-leads, program observation instructor de-briefs and participant evaluations.
  • Coordinate all program logistics with other AMC groups, departments and partners including chapters and other volunteer communities where appropriate.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and prepare program summary reports as needed
  • Collaborate with AMC’s communication staff in the creation of promotional and other information to raise awareness about the program within and outside of AMC’s community. Provide social media content and other deliverables associated with promotion of programs
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver, a range of environmental and outdoor education programs in the target region
  • Assist in directing the work of volunteers in outreach program delivery
  • Assist work within the surrounding communities to foster relationships between schools, youth and community organizations to increase resources in the schools for outdoor, place-based, and environmental education. Work to foster networking among community resources to increase youth development efforts.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching outdoor/environmental education for families and young adults is preferred.
  • Must be able to take initiative, have good attention to detail, and work at times without direct supervision.
  • Strong experience in program evaluation and presentation and exceptional public service skills.
  • A BA/BS in environmental studies, outdoor leadership and recreation, or related field is desirable.
  • Portuguese or Spanish speaker preferred.
  • Experience working with, or as, a volunteer. (2-3 year minimum)
  • An effective team approach in a large and diverse organization is appreciated.
  • Driver’s license with acceptable driving record is required.
  • Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR are required (or the ability to obtain prior to starting the position).
  • Physical abilities required: Must be able to carry up to 40+ pounds of equipment backpacking with ease.
  • Work is also performed in a standard office setting.
  • Incumbent must be willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Become a Team GreenSense Counselor

Cambridge Department of Public Works seeks a qualified individual to supervise a six-week summer youth program. The supervisor will work with a group of approximately 12 high school students to lead and coordinate educational activities to support learning and work objectives related to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in an urban setting, and to help these students develop a final project that reflects what they have learned by participating in the program. Specific duties include but are but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement a project-based curriculum on a variety of sustainability topics relating to urban life, including energy measurement, transportation, urban eco-systems (including forests and water), and waste reduction
  • Supervise students on a daily basis.
  • Schedule internal and external partners, guest speakers, and site visits into the weekly schedule.
  • Adapt materials and activities based on the needs of the students.
  • Assist students as they work to develop their final project.
  • Ensure professional presentation and behavior of students on daily basis.
  • Provide written evaluation and recommendations to program at end of summer

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with youth (ages 14-18) in an informal or experiential education setting
  • Demonstrated experience with group facilitation and team-building
  • Enthusiasm and flexibility; ability to “think on one’s feet” to revise and/or adapt to curriculum and schedule changes.
  • College coursework in environmental science, urban planning, or education preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Equivalent experience may substitute for education.
  • Solid basic skills in reading, writing, science, and mathematics
  • A demonstrated interest in environmental and energy issues
  • Familiarity with Cambridge preferred

Program Associate at the Center for Science and Democracy

The Center for Science and Democracy (CSD) at the Union of Concerned Scientists is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to promote the Center’s mission for advancing the essential role of science, evidence-based knowledge, and constructive debate as a means to improve the health, security, and prosperity of all people.  Under the direction of the CSD Program Manager and Senior Analyst, and working with other CSD staff at the Cambridge, MA office, the program associate will  provide administrative, budget, research, communications, outreach support to the goals and projects of the Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general program administration and logistical support, including compiling information, routine correspondence, travel and meeting arrangements, scheduling, reimbursements, event support, etc.
  • Provides administrative support for the CSD Director with regard to scheduling, travel, meeting preparation, communications and other tasks as required.
  • Supports production, publication and dissemination of CSD reports, including reports, fact sheets, and calendars, and other materials and mailings. Coordinates calendar of program events and deadlines, and compiles CSD updates.
  • With direction from the Program Manager and CSD Director, supports the development of program budget, and monitors program expenditures and tracks project schedules and staff times.
  • Helps develop and disseminate information to keep interested scientists and citizens informed and to support their advocacy for essential role of evidence-based decisions to democratic processes.
  • Provides logistical support for and participates in events such as skill-building workshops, community meetings, and scientific society meetings.
  • Supports web, database, and library research on selected science and democracy issues to support program work and funding proposals.
  • Gathers information and performs analysis to support other staff in responding to requests from the media, Congress, coalition partners, and others. Contributes to larger research projects conducted by other CSD staff, if needed.
  • Monitors CSD web pages, suggesting and coordinating the posting of updates and new materials.
  • Maintains familiarity with other UCS programs and coordinates CSD’s work of other departments. Maintains flexibility to be able to quickly shift priorities based on program needs.


Qualifications and experience: 
Two to four years of relevant experience as a program, administrative, or research assistant, and a bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants should have strong administrative and organizational skills, experience in balancing competing priorities, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The position requires self-motivation, good interpersonal skills, attention to detail, familiarity with office operations, and excellent skills in word processing, web research, and database use/maintenance.  Strong written and oral communication skills are important. A background in science, political science, communications or business management is preferred. Familiarity with the role of science in policy-making and/or environmental/public health/public safety issues is helpful, but not required.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full time position based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA, office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the mid-high $30,000s. Full Time Garden Educator

Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN) is a 36-year old urban environmental non-profit working to preserve, protect and expand open space in Boston. Working collaboratively with community, public agencies, and non-profits, BNAN combines the environment with cultural, social and public health issues. BNAN offers a wide range of educational, recreational and cultural programs to build constituencies for Boston’s community gardens, greenways and urban wilds.

BNAN is looking to fill a key position – the Garden Educator – to develop and coordinate garden education programs. The Garden Educator will be responsible for developing, implementing and/or presenting programs that increase people’s skills and knowledge of gardening, health and nutrition, and ecological concepts while working in collaboration with staff, volunteers and consultants.

BNAN is seeking a responsible, passionate and experienced educator with an understanding of community gardens and growing in a variety of urban landscapes and conditions. This individual should possess excellent educational skills, demonstrated experience with garden and nutrition-based education and experience with volunteer management.

Paid Environmental Assessment Internship: Invasive Plant Mapping

Two Environmental Assessment Interns will work as a team to map the extent of the invasive water chestnut plant throughout the length of the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers. The interns will be trained to use hand-held GPS MobileMappers and will work primarily from kayaks on the rivers. The data will be used to plan and assess the effectiveness of water chestnut removal efforts. The interns will work with office staff to obtain permission from landowners for access to the river as needed.

Location: Concord, Mass. and throughout the Sudbury-Assabet-Concord watershed

Qualifications: Ability to work with the public in a professional manner; ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team; a valid driver’s license and vehicle that can transport a kayak; experience in canoeing or kayaking in bodies of water during inclement weather (strong wind, rain); and enthusiasm for outdoor work. Past experience in plant identification; knowledge of GPS and GIS; and an interest in botany, wildlife, ecology, or related fields are preferred.

Compensation: $10/hour for up to 240 hours.

The internships start May 20th and end by mid-August. Schedule of work to be determined.
