Driving through New England in June, you’ve probably come across waves of lupine lapping the roadside. Indigo flowers as far as the eye can see is hard to come by on the east coast, so it’s no wonder why New Eng […]

Dear Dave,
Thanks for reaching out, and that’s a great question. There’s no one way to plant a roadside for pollinators, but plants that tolerate poor, dry soils would be your best bet. Native plants that come to mind are lance-leaf coreopsis, black-eyed susan, yarrow, wild bergamot (bee balm), common milkweed, most goldenrods.
If you’re planning on planting a seed mix on your property, it’s important to invest in preparing the site prior to sowing. Repeatedly remove any weeds over a period of 1-2 months. Sowing takes place after frost, but before snow. The following year your garden will become established and start to build up a small population of pollinating/beneficial insects.
Prairie Moon Nursery sells a variety of native, pollinator-friendly wildflower mixes, some of which would be suitable for your site. The “Pretty Darn Quick” mix is one that we’ve had success with: https://www.prairiemoon.com/pretty-darn-quick-pdq-prairie-seed-mix-prairie-moon-nursery.html
Let me know if you have any other questions!
