The Tufts Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (DEAR) Council is a collective body of Tufts University School of Medicine programs’ faculty, staff, and graduate students who are dedicated to cultivating a diverse and flourishing educational environment.
The DEAR Council intern position is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a collaborative and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the School of Medicine by providing vital administrative and operational support to the council Chair and Co-Chair and the greater council. You will be responsible for assembling information, reports, and other materials related to the departments and DEAR Council’s diversity goals, researching diversity and inclusion models and promising practices, and supporting the Chair and Co-Chair in the preparation and implementation of meetings, programs, and events. You will be expected to attend monthly executive meetings, council-wide meetings, and subcommittee meetings, as well as procure and plan our Race & Racism series, which are monthly events.
The successful candidate is currently enrolled in a graduate degree program under Tufts University School of Medicine, has demonstrated commitment and interest in DEI, and is interested in learning more about social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Higher Education, campus, and community. They will be able to serve in this role from April 2024 to May 2025. Compensation is $15/hour.
Core responsibilities for the DEI Intern will include:
- Work closely in collaboration with the Chair, Co-Chair, and other Exec Team Member(s)
- Attend and summarize relevant events and briefings
- Provide administrative support for events, meetings, and executive leadership
- Contribute to strategy development and implementation of DEAR-driven strategies
- Secure speakers for Race & Racism series and plan monthly events with support from Chair and Co-Chair
- Other duties as desired or assigned
- Examples of Specific Responsibilities from 2021-2024:
- Attend monthly Exec Board, Council-Wide, and Subcommittee meetings
- Orchestrate Race & Racism speaker series (invite speakers, coordinate/host events, produce advertisement materials)
- Create orientation materials, meeting & invitation agendas, and program advertisements
- Manage Tufts Box documents drive, e-list, and scheduling
- Write grant proposals, event synopses, and meeting minutes
- Lead team Student Subcommittee meetings and team of 5-10 student representatives
Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
- Currently enrolled in a Tufts University School of Medicine graduate program
- Able to commit up to 2-4 hours/week and manage flexible schedule appropriately to complete tasks
- Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom with ability to write quickly and effectively
- Self-motivated interest or curiosity in diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to the academic sector
- Commitment to teamwork, good interpersonal skills, positive attitude, and professional etiquette
- Openness and willingness to learn, explore, and research innovative diversity and inclusion management strategies and processes
- Work study strongly preferred
