Day 1

Hello everybody!

Welcome to the daily updates from our travel team of 6. We will be switching off writing these emails, starting with Sophie and a little bit of Natasha. We’re excited for our second trip to Malawi!

Thank you so much for your support and following us around on our journey! If you don’t know everybody on our team, head over to @tuftsewb on Instagram and look at our meeting the travelers posts!

After spending over 24 hours in New Jersey, we are finally on our flight to Malawi, with stops in Frankfurt and Johannesburg. We all had reached Newark safely and relatively on time! Sophie, Natasha and Gordon arrived from Boston, Adda from Canada, Hudson from LA, and Annie met us in Newark.

Yesterday we faced some difficulties after our flight to Johannesburg was canceled after 3 hours of sitting on the plane due to a hurricane in our path. At midnight, the 6 of us had to rebook our flights to Johannesburg, rebook our flights to Malawi, cancel our hotel in Johannesburg, and find a place to stay that night. Then, had to work through our itinerary to figure out how to fit all of our work in with one day less. Some of us got some Dunkin for a late dinner as we were all a bit hungry. Finally, we went to sleep at 5 am.

Today, we split up for the time before out 6:40 and 7:35 flights that will take us to Frankfurt. Natasha, Hudson, and I explored Hoboken, getting a delicious bagels, shopping at Trader Joe’s, seeing the Hudson River, and walking about 6 miles! Adda and Annie got to the hotel early and did a HIIT workout together, and slept in a bit later at their hotel. Gordon met up with friends for brunch in Manhattan.

We all got to the airport, and were able to meet up for a meal before our flight —pizza and salad— with our meal vouchers from United. There was a little bit of chaos while repacking our heavy luggages with many donations, however we were mostly fine! Everybody boarded their flights, and this time they took off (mostly on time)! Next stop: Germany!
