Eyob Gebreyes Habtu
Director, Payment and Settlement Systems Directorate, National Bank of Ethiopia
Mr. Habtu holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a Master of Business Administration. He joined the National Bank of Ethiopia in December 2009 as Director of the newly established Payment and Settlement Systems Directorate. Among others, his primary responsibility was to lead the National Payment System Modernization program and to coordinate key stakeholders in the implementation of the Ethiopian Automated Transfer System, the interbank payment system which has a functionality to handle both high-value time-critical and low-value bulk payments. Mr. Habtu was also tasked with drafting different regulatory documents and liaised with key partners for the establishment of the national central switch and the standardization of paper-based payment instruments. Prior to joining the National Bank of Ethiopia, he had worked for Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in the areas of retail banking and trade finance.
