Mtchaisi Chintengo is the Chief Examiner, Microfinance Supervision at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, responsible for managing the off-site and on-site supervision of microfinance institutions and financial cooperatives in Malawi.
She manages a team of about fifteen officers divided into three teams responsible for deposit taking microfinance institutions, non-deposit taking microfinance institutions and financial cooperatives. Mtchaisi has been with the Reserve Bank of Malawi since July 2000 starting in Bank supervision then transitioning to Non-Bank Financial Institutions supervision in 2006. Between 2006 and 2013 she was involved in the development of the legal and regulatory framework currently being used to regulate microfinance institutions and financial cooperatives in Malawi.
She is currently participating in the drafting of the new Microfinance Bill (2023) and Financial Cooperatives Bill (2023). In addition to gaining financial sector supervision experience, Mtchaisi has participated in various financial inclusion initiatives over the years. These include financial literacy, consumer protection, digitization, and MSME lending initiatives. She is currently the Chair, Deposit Insurance Implementation Technical Committee; Member, National Strategy for Financial Inclusion III Taskforce; and Member, Fintech Project Technical Committee.
