Our Mission and Values

Our mission in microbial sciences requires respect for all, and embraces the innovative thinking fostered by diversity. Thus we actively welcome and empower individuals from all backgrounds and identities to grow both professionally and personally, and oppose existing societal and institutional structures that perpetuate injustice and inequality. Hence we oppose racism, intolerance, sexism, and all workplace inequalities that are currently institutionalized in academic environments.

Core Values

Community – We strive to create a welcoming environment with an emphasis on open, professional communication, where individuals from all backgrounds can learn and thrive as scientists. We are determined to prevent a hostile work environment by committing to the following:

  • Listening without judgement
  • Speaking only for ourselves
  • Communicating when and how words or actions have hurt us
  • Apologizing when we have hurt someone
  • Encouraging a work/life balance that supports the well-being of all.

Respect – We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that prioritizes respect and compassion towards all people. We embrace diversity in race, ethnicity, disability, gender-identity, sexual orientation, belief systems, family make-up, and socio-economic background. In particular, we acknowledge that systemic racism has shaped the way we see our world and that we need to recognize instances of racism. We also know that we will make mistakes, and will acknowledge and learn from them.

Accountability and Leadership – Our lab values ethics, honesty, reliability and thoroughness. Each lab member will not only strive to grow as a scientist, but also foster the success of others by embracing opportunities to enhance the community through education, mentorship and outreach. Furthermore, we are grateful for the trust public institutions have invested in us by funding our work, and strive to focus our research on areas that benefit everyone.
