Located in the Old Washington County Jail, the PHS museum and archival collections document the domestic, social, business, and cultural life in the region of the Pettaquamscutt Purchase. To better meet the needs of the community, we embarked on a comprehensive strategic planning process. As a result of this process, we have developed a new vision for the future: to become a leading research and archival center dedicated to the preservation and promotion of South County’s rich and diverse history through programming, educational offerings and exhibitions. The Collections Intern will work directly with PHS staff to help achieve this new goal by assisting in the completion an inclusive inventory of the museum’s artifact collection. He/She will assist with the inventory process by recording, photographing, and researching objects. Interns will gain insight into how a historical organization manages and maintains collections, develop skills with the PastPerfect software, and conduct object-based research. Some duties will include: conducting a detailed inventory of an assigned museum space, assisting staff by researching aspects of the collection or specific objects, and provide support with other museum tasks. Qualifications include: being detailed-orientated, competency with computers; experience with catalog software a plus, strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, interest in history, museums, and preservation, excellent time management skills,and positive outlook,and research skills. Physical requirements include repeated climbing up/down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds and to perform duties while standing, sitting, and walking. About the Museum:

The Museum of African American History was incorporated in 1967 to preserve, conserve, and interpret the contributions of people of African descent and those who have found common cause with them in the struggle for liberty, dignity, and justice for all Americans. Through exhibitions, education projects, public programs, and the display of unique items from our collections, the Museum places the African American experience in an accurate social, cultural, and historical perspective.

The Museum Store, located on the Beacon Hill campus, provides visitors with an educational continuation of the Museum experience while generating income for the Museum’s programs and preservation projects. The Museum Store is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Job Responsibilities:
Interact with the public in a positive and enthusiastic manner

· Complete sales/operate cash register

· Assume responsibility for safeguarding of cash and daily receipts

· Assist with inventory maintenance

· Provide regular reports to Museum Store management

· Answer telephone inquiries

· Maintain store in clean and orderly fashion

· Occasionally work at special sales off-site

Qualifications:
· Ability to work a flexible schedule including Saturdays

· Experience in retail sales

· Proven customer service skills

· Basic computer skills

· An interest in African American history a plus

Description:
Worcester Historical Museum (WHM) is seeking a part-time Development Associate to provide assistance in all areas of fundraising. Reporting to the Museum’s Director of Development, the Development Associate will work on a number of vital projects that support the Museum’s fundraising and cultivation efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Museum’s Membership, Annual Fund, and Staples Society programs. Prepare correspondence, briefings, personalized letters, reports, summaries, and other materials
  • Coordinate the Harvey Ball, WHM’s large annual fund raising event
  • Assist with Corporate Council and Capital Campaign efforts
  • Interact successfully with donors, prospective donors, staff, and community members

Additional tasks include research, development and preparation of solicitation materials, database work, mailings, preparation for and support during special events, cross-departmental marketing and outreach projects, and general tasks vital to the well-being of the Museum.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of previous development experience
  • Knowledge of fundraising information resources, i.e., Guidestar
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environment while maintaining attention to detail
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structure, articulate letters and reports
  • Proven experience developing new programs to broaden donor base and enhance institutional outreach;
  • Proven ability to work on a range of time-sensitive projects simultaneously with limited supervision
  • Excellent computer skills in areas including Internet usage, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends
  • Able to lift and move 30 pounds

The gallery director reports to the dean of humanities, arts and cultural studies, and is responsible for all operational aspects of the Main Gallery, the primary exhibition space at Hampshire College. The director will curate and install innovative exhibitions, work collaboratively with faculty and students, and contribute broadly to academic programs. Responsibilities will include supporting the educational mission of the College, gallery management, curatorial practice, stewardship of Hampshire’s small permanent collection, and grant writing and fundraising. The director will work closely with students as they conceive, produce and install their thesis exhibitions. The gallery director will also work collaboratively with Museums10 and the Five Colleges. This full time, 12-month benefited position requires occasional evenings and weekends. We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package.

Qualifications:
An advanced degree with a minimum of three years relevant experience is required. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of global and transnational curating as well as hands-on skills and understanding of all aspects of installation and de-installation of artworks. Expertise on how to care for and manage art collections, including registration practices; object storage, handling, and care; documentation; packing, shipping, insurance, and legal and ethical issues. Familiarity with best practices in the acquisition, preservation, and display of new media art is required. Candidate must have the ability to manage resources and handle all logistics relating to gallery events including exhibition design; publicity; event planning; and arranging symposia, talks, and panels. Successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, writing and design skills. Solid computer skills and the ability to learn the database for the permanent collection (MIMSY), and to update the Gallery webpage is also required. Previous experience and success with grant writing, fundraising and development is a must. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential. Candidate must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. This position requires a valid driver’s license and ability to successfully meet the requirements of Hampshire College’s driver credentialing policy.
