JOB DESCRIPTION

Chief Executive Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director, as Chief Executive Officer of the Museum, reports to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for the continued realization of the project and the successful achievement and implementation of its mission and goals through its policies, programs and initiatives.  The Director provides creative leadership and administration in order to shape and implement the vision for the museum, leading an effective organization with respect to structure, communication, finance and personnel. The Director ensures that the organization is mission-mindful in all endeavors, leading the charge to engage preservation and history at the intersection of art, architecture, design, and advertising.

The Director is specifically responsible for the following:

Board Administration and Support

  • Spearheading collaboration with the Board of Trustees to establish strategic plans in order to achieve its mission to ensure sound operation of the museum, and to ensure the highest ethical standards are followed.
  • See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
  • Supports operations and administration of Board by advising and informing Board members, and interfacing between Board and staff

Program Planning, Development and Evaluation

  • Oversees design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs, products and services
  • Oversees education, programming and outreach initiatives to expand Museum awareness, audience and support in accordance with the Museum mission

Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities management

  • Works with staff and appropriate Board members in preparing a budget; recommend yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manages organization’s resources within those budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations
  • Work with Chief Financial Officer to develop and maintain sound financial practices
  • Manage the condition of the Museum campus facility, maintains all aspects to ensure a functional, presentable and pleasing facility
  • Works closely with the board, staff, and the appropriate city of Las Vegas personnel in the continued over-sight, management and development of the Neon campus and Neon Boneyard Park

Human Resources Management

  • Effectively manages the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations
  • Provides ongoing training, support and leadership to the staff, the Board of Trustees and the standing committees; encouraging staff and volunteer development and education
  • Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resources practices are in place
  • Oversees all staffing operations, including hiring, evaluating and terminating staff; providing direction and assuring high morale by the creation of a team committed to the Museum’s mission and with the skills to see it through.  Always ensuring that staff represents the Neon Museum in a positive manner.
  • Maintain a culture that attracts, keeps and motivates a diverse staff of quality people
  • Management of an appropriate organizational structure that insures initiatives and programs are supported internally
  • Prepares for the anticipated growth of the organization in planning of said organizational and staff structure
  • Supports an inclusive planning process and ensures policy decisions are used in setting annual program/project goals

Community and Public Relations

  • Assures the organization and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders
  • Representing the Museum to cultural, political, business, educational, media and funding communities: building constituencies for the organization and awareness of and support for its unique mission, collection and programs.
  • Cultivating partnerships with other cultural and educational institutions in the city, state, region and beyond to extend the Museum’s reach and maximize its potential.
  • Partaking in the life of the community by participating in civic and cultural activities, joining appropriate organizations and utilizing the cultural, economic and entertainment resources available
  • Serves as public face of the organization for a wide range of film, television, radio and print media; able to comfortably shift between live interviews and written ones.

Fundraising (nonprofit specific)

  • Oversees the fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resources requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals and administrating fundraising records and documentation
  • Develops a diverse funding base inclusive of corporate, foundation, individual, membership and grant-based giving

Earned Revenues

  • Oversees continued stability and growth in tour visitorship, mindful of organizational culture that emphasizes personalized scale and quality over quantity and limitations/opportunities presented by the nature of the collection
  • Oversees continued stability and growth retail initiatives to expand Museum education, awareness, audience and fiscal support
  • Oversees continued stability and growth in film & photo department’s success with a wide range of commercial photo shoots
  • Oversees continued stability and growth in corporate and private event rentals

Collections Management and Curatorial

  • Responsible for  curatorial oversight of Neon Museum collection, focused on Southern Nevada signage and sign-related artifacts and paraphernalia
  • Oversees care of the collection, conservation initiatives, collection and institutional archives in support of the Museum mission; works with the appropriate Board committee and collections staff in achieving this objective
  • Expands the collection per the mission of the organization and in support of educational goals and initiatives
  • Directs the installation design of collection and exhibition space
  • Serves as project manager or client representative in all sign restoration projects; works closely with key team and community members to ensure historical accuracy and mission-mindfulness in all restoration initiatives
  • Continues to develop strong collection maintenance policies and procedures in accordance with AAM standards
  • Spearheads the initiative to achieve AAM accreditation
