Intern position for Fall 2016 – September-December.

The USOC and the Crawford Family U.S. Olympic Archives work to ensure that records and artifacts of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement as well as our Olympians and Paralympians are preserved for posterity. The internship offers occupational experience designed to complement formal academic training in archival or museum studies. Our goal is to provide interns with a meaningful and realistic work experience that will be beneficial to both them and our organization.

The intern assists the Archivist and Historic Steward in performing a broad range of basic archival functions such as processing, preservation, and reference work involving the records of the US Olympic Committee, athletes, and the Olympic movement.  This includes the care, preservation, and conservation of artifacts in the USOC collection. Additional duties include research, planning and care of historic displays as well as prepping artifacts for loans, interaction with Olympians and assisting with of private tours of the archives and collections.  The intern will gain experience in description of collections, basic preservation techniques, accession procedures and collections management using the software program Past Perfect.

Graduate degree in archival studies, museum studies, or history preferred but not necessary.

Good writing, research, and organizational skills.

Experience relevant to the care, preservation, and conservation of artifacts is desired.

Experience in basic archival functions is desired.

Familiarity with the Internet, digital imaging, and data entry; and knowledge of Windows, Excel, Photoshop and Past Perfect is desired.

Able to work independently as well as in a group environment.

Ability to perform repetitive tasks and detail oriented.

Good organizational skills.

Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum in Crosbyton, Texas is now taking applications for two internships. The first will begin September 15, 2016, ending December 15, 2016; the second begins January 15, 2017, ending May 1, 2017. These are paid positions of $7,500 each. CCPMM is a small museum in the southern Texas Panhandle 36 miles from Lubbock, Texas. CCPMM’s mission is to preserve the history of Crosby County, Texas.

Each of these positions will introduce the intern to the organizational structure and functioning of a small museum. The scope of the work will include, but is not limited to: opportunities to contribute significantly to CCPMM’s large-scale projects; exhibit planning and installation which may include post-Civil War-era and/or farm and ranch exhibits; participation in public presentations, guided tours, and workshops; museum procedures and protocol; research in local archives, including Texas Tech University’s Southwest Collection; writing literature for objects. The intern will develop one educational project for youth over the course of the internship.

 

Eligibility: holds or is currently pursuing a BS/BA or a MS or MA in Museum Studies

Successful applicants will have a keen interest in: Southwestern US history and the contributions of multiple cultures to the Southwest; exhibit construction; museum education; research and writing; is fluent in English and knowledge of Spanish.

This position is funded by The Percy and Zina Lamar Foundation. Housing is not provided, but assistance will be offered in finding accommodations. CCPMM is an equal-opportunity employer.
