REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, TERM: 7-12 hours per week, minimum of 12 weeks STATUS: Unpaid Internship.The Pettaquamscutt Historical Society was founded in 1958 to encourage the study and appreciation of the Pettaquamscutt region. Located in the Old Washington County Jail, the PHS museum and archival collections document the domestic, social, business, and cultural life in the region of the Pettaquamscutt Purchase. PHS offers educational programming and exhibitions that inspire the study and interpretation of this area’s history. POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY: The Collections Intern will work directly with PHS visitors, members, and leadership as a docent by assisting with daily museum operations. He/She will inventory the museum’s collections and conduct research as needed. Interns will gain insight into how a historical organization manages and maintains collections as well as how to conduct original object-based research. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct a detailed inventory of an assigned exhibit, assist staff researching through objects, documents, and photographs, lead accurate and engaging museum tours for the general public, and support daily museum operations, including staffing the museum gift shop. QUALIFICATIONS: Detailed-orientated, strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, interest in history, museums, and preservation, excellent time management skills, organized, and positive outlook, and research skills. The Nichols House Museum offers unpaid internship positions to undergraduate and graduate students studying American history, library science, women’s studies, education, museum studies, political science, marketing, and other related fields. Internships offer valuable, wide-ranging museum experience to students looking to explore a career in the museum field. All interns develop a tour of the historic house and give tours to public, in addition to their major project (see below). Additional projects tailored to the student’s interest are also possible. Internships can be taken for course credit. The three intern positions available for Fall 2015 are: 1)      Accreditation Intern: The intern chosen for this position will assist staff with the preparation necessary to apply for Accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. This is a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of museum management and administration. 2)      Cuseum App Intern: The intern chosen for this position will assist staff with the evaluation and testing of a new digital tool created for the museum using beacon technology company Cuseum. This intern will also assist with the research and writing necessary for generating the content for Phase 2 of the tool’s development. 3)      Women in Politics Intern: The intern chosen for this position will assist staff with the research and event planning necessary for 2016’s theme of Women in Politics. The intern will gain experience bridging the Nichols Family’s political activism with today’s political arena through exhibit research and outreach for public programming throughout the upcoming year.
