Exhibit Design Graduate Internship

American Independence Museum, Exeter, NH

The American Independence Museum in Exeter, NH seeks a Graduate-level intern to deepen the research of the museum’s collection. This year the museum is looking to create a one year exhibit focusing on George Washington utilizing objects and materials in the museum’s collection. Reporting to the Executive Director and Operations Manager, interns will be responsible for exhibit planning, research, gathering objects, writing labels, and installation of the exhibit. Interns will also have a chance to take part in other aspects of Curatorial and Collections Management, including working with Past Perfect, cataloguing, exhibit monitoring, inventorying, and more. A minimum of 200 hours should be completed between mid-January and May, 2016. Schedule must be predetermined and correspond with the museum’s off-season hours. Some work may be completed off-site. Qualifications: Intern should be in the process of completing or recently completed their Master’s degree in history, museum studies or related subject. Strong interpersonal skills, detail-orientated, and excellent time management skills are needed. Prior exhibit installation experience is not required. Although the position is unpaid, this is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a Museum in transition and can be completed for course credit. Description:
The Arlington Historical Society is devoted to the discovery, interpretation, sharing, and celebration of Arlington’s rich and diverse heritage. The society operates the Smith Museum and the Colonial era Jason Russell House, site of the bloodiest battle of April 19, 1775.  For more information, visit http://www.arlingtonhistorical.org  This spring/summer internship is to assist with collections management at the Society.  Hands on experience will come in the form of a remarkable collection of objects from a single family spanning 200 years.  Objects vary from photographs and paper to clothing. Through this the intern will learn about various issues related to collections care and management with specific emphasis on improving practices and fundraising for collections care and issues related to historic house collections management.  All training will be provided, including instruction on Past Perfect Museum Management software.Intern hours and schedules are flexible to meet the needs of students and academic credit requirements, although interns are expected to work at least 5 hours per week for a minimum of ten weeks. To apply, send resume and letter of interest detailing availability, total or weekly hours requested/required, and area of specific interest, if any. We have a rolling deadline, and accept applications until internship positions are filled. We are happy to work with college or university departments for interns to receive academic credit.
Qualifications:
Applicants should be enrolled in or recent graduates of a Museum Studies program or related course of study.
