Our Design Story…

Our design was born from several ideas fused together. When brainstorming for this project, our ideas ranged from robotic elements, to animal labor. Two stand out ideas were a pipette with multiple stops that would eject some amount of liquid so that your time could be optimized when pipetting the same substance many times over. Secondly, it’s annoying to have to dispose of a tip and then get a new one every time you switch substances that you are pipetting, so we thought of the idea of a pipette tip reloader. This would make the tip reloading process more efficient. We combined these two ideas for our main design. Then, when analyzing the safety of our pipette, we decided that liquid spraying at the user from a defect of the tip or pipette in some way could be a big hazard. So, our next design input was a splash guard that would protect the user from the spray of any chemical or biological substance that would be harmful to the user. Finally, when presenting our design review 2, a classmate (Tallia Dudley) gave us a brilliant idea! She said that in order to not have the plunger be super long with the multiple stops mechanism, we should think about how a multicolored pen has a similar feature. We thought this was a great idea, and changed our design accordingly.
