The spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi is the causative agent of Lyme disease, the common tick-borne disease in the U.S. and Europe. No potent human vaccine is currently available. In this invention, we eliminate Factor H-binding activity of a Lyme borreliae protein CspZ and identify this mutated protein as a potent vaccine candidate.
